Soil Knowledge

The living
soil.

Understanding soil pH, structure and the soil food web is the foundation of everything you grow.

🧪Soil pH — what it means
pH measures how acidic or alkaline your soil is on a 0–14 scale. 7 is neutral. Most vegetables prefer 6.0–7.0. Blueberries love acidic soil (4.5–5.5). Brassicas prefer slightly alkaline (7.0–7.5). Test with an inexpensive kit from any garden centre — it takes 2 minutes.
🌿The soil food web
Healthy soil is alive — a single teaspoon contains more organisms than there are people on Earth. Bacteria, fungi, nematodes, protozoa and earthworms create a web that converts organic matter into plant-available nutrients. Feed the soil, not the plant.
🍂Compost fundamentals
A 50/50 mix of 'green' (nitrogen-rich: kitchen scraps, grass) and 'brown' (carbon-rich: cardboard, dry leaves) breaks down fastest. Turn regularly for aerobic decomposition. Ready in 3–6 months. The best free fertiliser on the planet.

The Sky

Read the
night sky.

The stars that guided sailors, farmers and travellers for millennia. Knowing your sky is knowing where you are in time and space.

Finding North Tonight
IFind Ursa Major (the Plough / Big Dipper) — seven bright stars in a saucepan shape, always in the northern sky.
IIFollow the two 'pointer' stars at the end of the saucepan — extend the line five times their distance.
IIIYou've found Polaris (the North Star) — it sits within 1° of true north and never moves. Face it: you're facing north.
IVIn the southern hemisphere, use the Southern Cross: extend the long axis 4.5 times — that's due south.

Personal Rhythms

Your body,
the moon.

The female cycle mirrors the lunar cycle with striking precision. Understanding both — together — is one of the most powerful things.

Menstrual
🌑 New Moon
Rest, release, reflect. Root vegetables, warming foods, iron-rich meals.
Follicular
🌒 Waxing
Energy rising. Begin new projects, lighter foods, fermented.
Ovulatory
🌕 Full Moon
Peak vitality. Connect, create, raw foods, antioxidants.
Luteal
🌘 Waning
Turn inward. Complex carbs, magnesium, dark chocolate.
